I've really been enjoying my new 82 FLH. On 2 occasions, after 100 mile rides when temperature is really hot outside, my primary starts getting noisy. It sounds like chain slapping but I've checked the tension and it measures ok. Runs really good though. I only hear it when I let off the throttle. After bike has set over night and cooled down, I don't hear the noise again. Just after a lot of miles and outside temp really hot. (running 60w Valvoline oil recently changed)
the chain is worn and stretching to much after it runs that far - or the primary bearing is going away - replace them both
when you put the chain on end like lt runs in the primary folded over its self - hold it in your hands at about 6 inches and slide it back and forth the lower one - to see how much pin wear it has you will surprised how much it moves - the new one wont do that at all zero movement if you buy a USA chain - china crap will be worse then the old one
you might want to check out the rear chain isnt touching your primary just underneath the starter motor...got any pics of your bike???? i have an '82FLH as well
