I would like to get a new ignition switch for my 79 flh. I have never had a key and it just feels sloppy. It has cut out a few times and I suspect it is about to be toast. So the question is, which one should I get? I want one that last a long time, I dont care what type of key it has and i would like it to run with lights off or on (which is the way it is now)
If you want a direct aftermarket replacement, check your service manual or pull your dash to determine how many terminals you have on your switch. I initially bought a standard 6 terminal switch for my year and model bike but found out my switch had 5 terminals...so bought a Fatbob 5 terminal Ignition Switch #495611 so I did not need to rewire the switch.
Stock switch with no keys
5 terminal switch with key
6 terminal switch
According to the parts guy that knows older bikes at the dealership, get the switch with the brass bar across the underside of the switch. The 6 terminal heavy duty switch from J&P Cycles shown above did not have that brass bar
Replaced mine with Victors rewire, Direct replacement, Deluxe HD Restorations...... Check them out
It may be Foreign Made (Can't tell), But it's better than the one from JP.... I got one of them prior to this.
I agree with the others. When I bought my bike, the previous owner gave me a new switch. After removing the old one, I realized the new switch was not like the old. The old one had the brass bar underneath and the new one just felt cheap compared to the old. I found an exact one on ebay for like $25. Works great and now have 2 keys.
Yeah, just my $.02 here, but dont buy a cheap one. I am using the one that came with my dash kit on a rebiild of a 72 FLH and its a POS. If you dont rev the bike when turning on your lights, it dies. I forgot to turn my lights on last weekend after fueling up and turned them on going about 60 and the bike massively backfired. Ive been seeing drag specialties switches on eBay for 35$. Are those ok?
