Default Starter Bolts.... Secrets?

When I first bought my shovel I had issues with a broken starter housing. Hitachi starter which was in there was hitting on the transmission and I couldn't get it lined up properly so I upgraded to a Prestolite with a different starter housing to the primary and everything lined up perfectly and worked great. TILL....
A couple of weeks ago I noticed that one of the starter bolts came out and it actually broke off inside the primary. So I snugged the other starter bolt up and made a bracket to support the rear to starter. It probably should have had that in the first place.. it was missing since I had it so I didn't think to put one in until after the issues.
So this morning I took the battery and oil tank out to get a closer look at the whole issue and yeah I got a broken stud in there actually it's a bolt.
Question is should I be putting studs in there I don't know?
And.. is it common for the bolts to loosen up.? I've been using loctite.,. Don't understand.... One thing I did notice was that the chain was actually hitting the starter housing so I'm thinking this is my real issue....
One more question, should I drill and tap the primary to accept 5/16” STUDS or BOLTS? I don't want to do this again.... Thanks...

Hey Bob, I tapped my 86 solenoid to 5/16 from 1/4 with no issues ,on and off many times.Maybe try tacking a bolt to the broken stud to get it out? Good luck

One thing I did notice was that the chain was actually hitting the starter housing so I'm thinking this is my real issue ... Check the front sprocket for your rear chain ... You may be a tooth too big ... If I remember correctly 24 is as big as you want to go ... I've seen guys take a thin strap of steel and drill a couple of holes in the inner primary and bolt a piece of steel to keep the drive chain from eating a hole in the inner primary housing :<(

Thanks. I have heard of the chain issues with a 24 tooth... I am running a 23 on the trans.. most likely will be a 5/16 stud.. My only problem is the the 1/4x20 bolt that snapped was stainless... Not good...

Short shocks, and bigger front sprockets... happens all the Time...
as Stock it will Not Rub!!!
My '74 is unmarked!!!

BTW If you use a spring loaded chain tensioner it will fly up and rub also...
Seen it... won't use 'em... adjust properly!!!

Unless you have a quality hardened bit and a drill press (guarntees a flat 90 degree surface) it may be a real bitch to get that stainless bolt out. Might be worth taking it to a good machine shop and have them do it for you so that you don't ruin your inner primary from hand drilling and not having a straight round hole.

Am running the stock length shock @ 13 1/2” and what I believe is the stock 23 youth gear.
Panz, thanks for the link. Will get one...

13-1/2 is for round swingarm bikes... I'm thinking 12-1/2 for square... and there should Not be contact with the Starter housing with stock and a 23T sprocket..
No T-6 or M-8 or whatever they called it Spring loaded tensioner???? Something just ain't right...

looks like a square swingarm to me... so if you have 13-1/2 inch shocks and that much rubbing... we need to have an investigation!!!

If you let the chain get slack...it will hit the starter housing ...even with correct shocks, and the 23t sprocket
