What does it mean when a VIN that has obviously not been altered, clearly has matching VINs on both frame and motor, it follows all HD VIN "rules" but it can not be found in any database.... after decoding the vin it shows to be a 1979... what does this mean? What is this bike? HD vin lookup says its not found.

Two things, three really. One nice first post, second 79 was a weird year for the factory all kinda strange stuff came out of there and not all made the official records and lastly your in Missouri and I'll tell you from long personal experience lots of bikes in that state are not always what they appear to be, seen some damned skillful renumbering jobs with factory stamps. Older bikes in particular you have to pay close attention to before you buy.
Some 1979 engines had totally different numbers. This was a factory idea that was quickly changed after they were notified that it made the bikes look stolen to some law enforcement agencies. The production date range is 1/9/79 - 2/7/79, and the frame VINs affected are or should be 43000H9 through 48199H9. The "crankcase number" is reported to be a ten digit numeric ID.
