So I was stuck in second and jammed on the shifter to get it into first and it got stuck pulled everything apart and found this arm wasn’t in the slot. See pics below. I reseated it and ran through the gears and it did it again. The bike has only 22,000 original miles so I can’t imagine it being worn out, but maybe it is. Have any of you guys dealt with and fixed this issue? I’m stuck and need any help you are willing to offer
remove the trans top lid - you can leave the unit in place but we pull the unit - overall mileage means nothing when it comes to
the trans oil that was used
the way it has been shifted and used over the years
switching speedos on a bike is as normal as putting gas in it - did you buy it new ??? if not all bets are off
the ratchet lid top bushing in the cover is suspect - it requires the welch plug cap to be removed AND YES you can damage the top cover if not removed correctly - under the cap is a circlip remove it and the shift mech can come out clean spotless and dry - what your looking for is the mech and the bushing being correctly tight almost no play back and forth
this is one of those things experience is the key to knowing whats going on - what you may think verses what actually is not working correctly is 2 different things - bring it to a shop that actually does not sell underwear - a real bike shop and have him repair it

Agree wholeheartedly... Preferably a Shop that knows the difference between a Cowpie and RatchetTop
I agree that a knowledgeable shop is the best option, but I don't have the money to pay a shop. I'll try it myself and if I can't fix it, I'll take it to a shop when I have the money.
I have SOME understanding of that shifter mechanism.
To get the shifter shaft to come out of the slot on the pawl carrier would take a LOT of force and almost certainly should have caused damage (bent part or worse) or the bushing that the whole shifter plate and shift mechanism rotates on is very worn to allow it to be pushed out of position so the shifter arm could come out of the slot.
If the shaft that the shift plate rotates on has that much slop in the bearing/bushing surface you will need to have a custom bushing made for it or get a top in better condition.
I don't think anyone makes replacement tops for that type of shifter but there must be some good used ones floating around or maybe locate an NOS top if you are lucky.
