Ok found out a couple more things about the wheels. The 21" chrome spoked did come on 77 FX. According to my parts book but they did not list a 7 spoke cast aluminum for early 77 and back. So I guess mine only came with the chrome spoked rims but does seem like the 21"er is stock..
Only been in the Business 30 years... but never seen no '70's FX with a spoked 21 from the factory!! Only 21 from the MoCo in the 70's that comes to mind is the FXWG..
But... I certainly don't know it all..
How new is that book yer using????
I'll look up some info on the spoked mag wheels today. Think most of it is listed in the Accessory Catalogs re: availablity of what fits what.
FX/E models came standard with aluminum front hub laced to a 19" rim and zinc plated spokes (MoCo spokes had a diamond shaped stamp on the end of them). One of the big differences in the hub (both aluminum and mag style) is that 1977 and earlier were a single disc; 1978 offered a dual disc up front (and along with that came a different type of brake caliper).
......oh and racepres, you have that FX of yours set up nicely. Really like the looks of the forward controls. And quick question (so as not to hijack thread)....are those PM components?

I know you said 70's but my 82 FXWG had the 21" spoke wheel from the factory. The frame decal denotes it as well.
Parts book list 2 different rims for 73 and later FX style bikes, a 19" and a 21". Part #43001-79 and 43018-73 (19") are specifically listed for FX/E/EF models. Part# 43682-80B (21") is listed for 80+ FXWG as well as for 73-80 FXE/EF/B/S models. My assumption would be that although it shows as available as a retrofit for earlier years (parts manual has an 83 part number and shows published in 1986), it was not standard (80 part number) from the factory and I don't show it as available from the Accessory books either. Suppose the answer would be found in a parts book published prior to 1980.

I'm using the 71-84 parts book #99455-83c and in it, it states the 21"er was available on 80-84 FXWG and 73-80 FXE, FXEF,FXS-80 FXEF-80 and FXB. The only one that want listed was the FX and FL.. Dang... But..... I have one... Lol....

My parts manual did not state wether aluminum or steel (chrome) and it's ok Panz I've never seen you take over a thread.. I have a lot to learn about the older bikes...
Just looked in my 41-78 parts book #99456-78 and that only list 2 chrome rims the one for 73-* is 43509-74 and 73-77 is 43509-73 both only 19". As for the cast wheel they list a 19" #43522-77 for late 77-* and nothing for early 77 down..
K....herz a couple of pics from the 78 Accessory Guide. Lists several different mag rims available depending on year and of course wether it is an FX or FLH type model.

Those are beautiful Super Glides and should be able to help immensely. So the Tank is definitely the single 3.5 gallon? Also I noticed that both of those have mid controls, did they ever come with floor boards and heel/toe shifters? My 77 does have what appear to be original mounts for the front. I have heard that for a couple of years that the MOCO was cutting off these mounts? So would a 77 have the floor boards?
Yes it's a 21 and did come with a 19 originally. I found a supplier that claims NOS 7 spoke front 19"er but cannot locate the rear... So I might just keep it as is....
