Installed mirrors with LED turn signals and a license plate bracket with LED turn signals.
Installed LED flasher unit in headlamp bucket
Turned key on and operating with battery only, the signals work like a charm.
Fire the motor up and the signals stop working.
Went through two LED flasher units with identical results.
My speculation is that the electrical system is pushing more juice than the flasher can withstand when the motor is running.
I'm not an electrical whiz, but it seems like I should be able to put something in front of the flasher that would keep excess or spiking voltage from damaging the flasher unit.
Fixed the issue with LED flasher units getting destroyed by the electrical system. Some lasted longer than others, but all bit the dust eventually. Placing a resistor on the positive input before the flasher solved it. Not knowing what value resistor I would need, I ordered multiples off Ebay and experimented. Some would not allow enough current to pass and the signals didn't function. Kept stepping up incrementally in voltage until I found one that allowed the signals to work. Setup has been working fine since the resistor install. Have been running a Custom Dynamics license plate frame with LED signals and a set of Rivco LED signal mirrors. So staying true to my brother's setup and feeling much safer at night.
