Need to replace the inner primary bearing that supports the mainshaft on a buddy's 76 FLH. It is part #9037 or #9040. Only difference is that one is shielded the other is not.
What I am referring to...
The one on the left is a used Fafnir. No numbers on it other than the patent #. Timken/Fafnir bearings are still USA made.
Looked at PEER and KSK bearings and they are China made. Hoping to avoid China made.
I believe the difference is the ball count the bearings are the same - I forget the rubber verses the tin shields nomenclature but its tagged on the end - the china bearings last 6 to 12 months no matter what grease you use
we get the usa units and remove the rubber shield wash it out and re pack it with aircraft landing wheel grease
we buy out dated aircraft grease for pennies on the dollar - some how they think the grease in a sealed container goes bad after 5 years
but in a pinch we have also used the mobil 1 syn Red wheel bearing grease - found it to be almost the same
japan and the rest of the bearing hi end manufactures' are in standard with one another - if its reasonable grab it - but I will look and send a picture of the numbers
SKF has that bearing also, think that's the last few I used. Couple of german manufactures too but can't remember the names offhand, it's a common size I've found in the surplus section on ebay occasionally for less than the chicom junk.
I bought a stack of bearings from a guy on eBay.
I don't remember the sellers name.
They are Japanese, KSK, R16RS.
They have plastic shields on each side.
As per John's instructions, I remove the side shields, clean out the original grease and pack them myself with Mobil 1...until I run out of Mobil 1.
Then I have a couple tubes of Green Grease to use.
And yes, I reinstall the shields after packing them.

Anyone tried the silicon nitride ball bearings as opposed to metal ball bearings?
I see these bearings offered but know nothing about their ability to handle the loads generated in the Harley inner primary/mainshaft application.
I also don't know if they come shielded.
