Default speedometer reads fast

I just got around to checking the speedometer on my chopper with a GPS, and as I suspected it's a little more than 10 percent high. The speedometer is one of those mini jobs with indicator lights, and says M=2,0 on it (2:1 ratio?). I couldn't find any markings on the drive unit on the front wheel, which is a 21". I'd like to keep the speedo because there are lots of wires attached and 6500 miles indicated. I am hoping there is a 2240 drive on the wheel and I can change it to 2:1 and get them working properly together. I just don't know if that would make it read faster or slower? Who can tell me what can be done? Thanks, Joe

I get it - but I never had luck with those communist speedos - reading slow and the next one was fast and another one goes up to 40 then pegs

be very happy its close - AND its lasted a very long time compared to most - screwing with it could be the death nail

Knowing how off it is, is half of the battle. My stock speedo seems to go up to about 60 MPH and then no more, regardless of speed. Apparently my Shovel has no issue doing 75 MPH all day long, who knew!??!?!?

I pulled the wheel and the drive is marked 67120-84B, which is 2240:60 ratio. What would happen if I replaced it with one that had 2:1 ratio, like 67127-84A? (besides needing a spacer) Would the speedo read slower or faster? Thanks

I believe a 2:1 ratio drive unit will slow down the cable compared to a 2240:60 drive. Before you spend the dough on a 2:1 try this, disconnect the cable from the speedo or at the drive and observe how much the cable (or drive) turns when you rotate your wheel one turn.
That will confirm whether or not a 2:1 drive will slow down your cable but what change that will make at your speedo, I do not know.
A speedometer shop may be able to tell you if they are familiar with HD speedos.

I finally found out how to compare the two ratios: 2:1 means the cable spins 2000rpms at 60mph, where the other spins 2240rpms at 60mph. So changing the wheel sender will indeed slow down the cable, and lower the MPH about 11%.

Before I make the change though, I have to verify the odometer is also reading fast, not just the speedo needle. That'll be a project for the spring.

60 degrees this weekend so I verified the odometer is fast. I ordered the other drive unit and will figure out spacers.
