Default 66 issue

First post here. Hello. Read this forum periodically. Knowledgeable guys here so.....

Have a 1966 flh. Inherited from father-in-law. Sweet azz bike to say the least. I ride about 40 miles daily to work and back. Been ridden nearly everyday for about 8 months now. Great running bike. Stock as far as I know. Been rebuilt once that I’m sure of. Top and bottom.

Anyway, problem is, if I have to sit in traffic idling for more than a minute or two it will pop and miss when I do finally take off. Always clears out and runs good after a half mile or so. But frustrating none the less. Always idles fine.

Any my ideas what might cause this? Thanks

Just for clarity....always idles fine except when sitting in traffic?...did you check for intake leaks?

I should have been a little clearer. Bike has always idled fine.
It’s when traffic gets backed up and I have to sit for several minutes. It continues to idle well but when I start to accelerate after sitting for several minutes it pops and misses for about a half mile. Only happens after a few minutes of sitting at idle. Runs great otherwise. Thanks

On my 72 I had to remove the coil cover due to the same problem. If I got stopped in traffic it would trap the engine heat by the coil and start to run like crap until I got moving again for a bit.

The coil doesn’t have a cover on my bike but it definitely does look kinda suspect. Old and cracked. Gonna order one tomorrow.
Very well could be the problem. Needs replacing anyway. Thanks for the responses.

Can you post some pictures of it. I have no clue what could be wrong with it I just want to see the bike.

The old bikes do not like to sit in traffic. The worst is doing 40-50 miles on the highway, then get off at an exit and start dealing with red lights and stop and go traffic. heat is the enemy. My '70 does weird things in similar circumstances. One thing I find is a low idle will enhance the issue. What to you have the idle set to? A low looping idle, potato, potato, sounds great but not what they want, especially in your circumstance. Just one idea, but the fact that she is over 50 years old and a little finicky is likely the answer. Good luck, we love pics.

Only picture I have. I know, not very original, but man do I love this bike. It sat for several years before I acquired it. I changed oil, gas, plugs, etc. all the normal things you would do. She fired up and ran like a friggin top. Truly nothing compares to blasting down the highway on this ol bike.

Poured oil at first. Few odds and ends and I’ve about got it leak free. Small transmission and small primary leak still to fix. But, barely a drip under her most of the time.
