Question shovelhead Fly wheels, cast #s ??

Hello,
i have question, any one seen these Fly Wheel casting numbers ? can't find em in my H-D parts manuals , would like to positively identify them before a possible purchase , thanks for any Info, best regards Troy


these look like OEM H-D, but can't find the casting numbers in H-D parts Manuals . . .

. . . 1970 to 1972 ??
Help would be very welcomed , thanks Troy

  1. what you have is 1970 to 1972 side oil flywheels look at the pinion end it should have an oil feed hole in the side of it rhat goes into the cam cover bushing

to johnjzjz . . .
of corse i saw the actual casting Numbers on the fly wheels but i can't find them listed in the H-D parts manuals . . .i cant look at the pinion shaft, as these photos are the ones posted in an ebay auction. . . .its hard to tell but i think that the pinion shaft is 73 & later . .

  • amf was sloppy at things and that is one of them i think the early original book has the numbers but not after
and yes 73 up shaft till comonize tapers came in a works as well

i have H-D parts Manuals "FL Models 1941-1984" & "FX Models 1971-1984" & neither one lists these casting #s , i did find this supplement Manual on ebay & am currently waiting on an answer from the seller if the 1970 fly wheels are listed or not . . .

. . .hoping to find out if the casting #s are listed in this H-D supplement . . .

Hey look what i just found !! using the catalog part# listed on the supplement . . . " 99456-71" . . . maybe the fly wheel #s are listed heir !




Parts Catalog 99456-71 . . .i would bet the fly wheels 23923-70A are listed in heir . . .

maybe - but they are convertible from side oil to end oil 74 inch so what is it you need them for

well if they are indeed interchangeable , i think all i would need is these set of fly wheels & a ' 73 & later nose cone cam cover , sense i couldn't the part #s for the fly wheels, i thought some one from the forum might know if this swap would work , that is taking a set of '72 cases & fitting them with a set of '70 fly wheels with '73 & later pinion shaft &'73 & up cam cover ,problem solved & i'll have a better up graded oiling mod to the crank !!

Casting numbers on parts are not synonymous with parts numbers from the book. Parts book (of any kind) will be no help.

No one (to my knowledge) has taken it upon themselves to document (and publish) all the changes and progressions of Shovelhead models from 1966 to 1984.

Donny Peterson has a 2-volume set on Shovelheads but his information on flywheel assemblies only discusses them as a set/part number and not listed individually by left and right sides

Foundry casting numbers do not show up in the parts books.
