Default Advice on ignition timing

83 Lowrider. Points instead of electronic module. No teardown on original engine. I am not clear on the exact static timing method. I set the points to .018. There is a dot and a vertical line on the flywheel. It's my understanding that on late model 80 shovels, you use the vertical line for timing. ?? One of my questions are: when static timing, is the front cylinder suppose to be at TDC or at it's advance mark when setting timing. Also, are the advance weights suppose to be rotated to the advance position when timing. I am familiar with the points close and open when adjusting for timing, I just do not know which mark to use and the position of the advance unit. Thanks.

You should get an early Shovelhead or Ironhead Manual...
Your '83 should have a Vertical line for TDC,and a "line above a dot" mark for advance.
Put the single dot, or lazy 8 if you have that mark, in the window with Front cyl on Compression stroke... set points to Just begin to open with Mechanical advance mechanism at Full Advance...
After of course setting point gap...and checking/adjusting Both Cylinders ...
BTW... Next time we hear from you will be an Exploded advance mechanism... Hard to source Good ones, and one Needs to spend time with them at least Twice a season..
If someone has been in that Motor.... It may be prudent to Look and see which mark is TDC [front]

Thanks for the reply. I replaced the advance unit (really worn out) with a unit that is probably a Chinese knock-offs. J&P sells some weights that are made here and I'll probably going to get them. I initially timed with the vertical line toward the back of the window and no advance. My bike runs ok except for when I open full throttle in 3rd or 4th gear. It starts cutting out. I have a S&S super E. The carb has been cleaned and rebuilt. .072 main jet and .0295 intermediate jet. Front cylinder compression: 115 psi, rear cylinder compression: 120 psi. I did a 70 mile test run yesterday. I pulled my plugs and they look good. I recorded 40 mpg. I'll check for TDC on front cylinder and which mark it is. I'll revisit the timing procedure again and thanks.
