Default "O" ring for starter solenoid

Is there any benefit or drawback to using a standard neoprene "O" ring in place of the foam gasket that normally goes between the Solenoid and Primary?

I use the condom looking thing that extends into the primary and zero leaks.

Mine has the condom looking thing as well, but I always put it inside the primary opening. I never tried leaving it on the outside or it never stayed out there if I did perhaps?

You put it on the solenoid then put the solenoid in the primary, the lip acts as a gasket that gets sandwiched like the foam seal would.

Is this the type you guys are referring to as being sandwiched or is it a different style than the one pictured? It is not my pic, I used a picture from eBay, but that is the style on my bike.
