Surprisingly... the Ironhead XLCH... the Real One... had no provision for a filter... the Little lunchbox oil tank certainly could Not accomodate one.
That's it... under the duct tape to hold the cap on during fairly hard acceleration..

You mean manufacture a Different Filter Mount???
A Little Extreme... I'm thinking finding a proper filter may be a better option... But, not my bike...

Make sure it is 5/8 -18. Take a 5/8-18 nut and see if it screws on easily. If it does it most likely is the standard modern Harley oil filter. If it is metric it is a Harley 63810-80A oil filter or K&N 172C. These are all approximately 3 inches in diameter.

No, I'm just going to modify the filter mount I have.
I've looked high and low for the filter. The NAPA guy had no luck either. I know that the 5/8-18 is close to a metric thread so I checked it with a micrometer and a pitch gage. Maybe the PO altered the filter plate?

I would go to the hardware store and buy a 25 cent nut and try it. If it is indeed 5/8-18, most Harley dealers have racks of that filter on display as it is pretty much standard nowadays and has been for years. Call a Harley Dealer and get the number of that filter and then cross reference it online. I don't know that number because if you go in and ask for an oil filter for 2000 and later Harley they hand you one. I am sure they fit older than 2000 as well. Heck there should not be trouble finding a Harley Dealer or filter in Wisconsin!

Ok I figured it out. The nipple from the filter plate is in fact 5/8 - 18. But the filter that came off is M16 x 1.5. The filter's threads are so short and the threads are so similar that the filter spun on the inch threads. I was going around trying to find a filter with the same threads as the nipple. So I have a filter plate with screwed up threads and the wrong nipple.

So, yer saying the Housing Nipple is 5/8, but the Filter end of the nipple is M16??
What is screwed up about the Nipple??

But... no way I put just any old Filter on My Shovelhead... Evo Either... Twinky takes a Different Filter, Even if it does Thread on.
That Mount looks alot like the '80's Shovelhead O.E. Housing/mount, Like Panz says. They take a metric Filter Wix- 57013 or K&N 172
the 3/4 thread is the Evo and Shovel FXR filter Wix- 51215 or K&N 170

No, this is weird- the nipple is 5/8-16 on both ends. I think someone forced the wrong nipple in the plate. so the threads in the plate are screwed up.

What I plan to do then is modify the filter plate to accept the filter that is recommended.
