Default Transmission ID help

Hoping some can help me determine more information about this transmission in my 78 FXE. Do any of these markings help determine if original or period correct?

your looking for - speeding big twin - he comes around when he sees it he will let you know exactly what you are asking

but 78 FXE to my knowledge has a front wheel speedo even tho the trans drive speedo gear its blocked off on your case - the D11 is the questionable date

Casting number 34703 65 was used on H-D trans cases for 1965 Panheads and 1966 thru about early-1977 Shovelheads. Re the indented 1, my best guess is that it may be an inspector marking. Some cases have an indented 2. Some also have the letter E stamped nearby.

I don’t know what D11 indicates. Some 1965-1970s trans cases I’ve seen have a lone D while others have D3, D12, D16, D18, D19, D21, D27, N, N11, N21 etc. But some cases have nothing there and no sign that anything was removed. Sometimes you’ll find similar ID inside 1965-later trans lids.

P9317 is an additional original component identifying number, aka security code, aka anti-theft number. I can’t see anything wrong with it and here’s an example for comparison of some characters.

The letter P suggests the trans case was used for a 1975 model. Other letters used for 1975 trans cases were N and R. (The letters O and Q were skipped.)

Any additional ID on the lower triple clamp? And what about the engine and frame? Are they both 1978?

Don't know if this is helpful or not. Mine is a 1978-1/2 FXE (still has the V-1 electronics in it). I believe it is original to the bike.

Speedo drive gear hole is just a blank

Thanks Dave. Cases with your casting number often have no hole for the speedo drive but some do and I imagine it depends on model. The letter Z on the front is consistent with 1978 as would be the letter Y. I think late-1978 may have seen the intro of double letters AA.

Thanks. Yes both frame and engine match and 1978.

Cheers. Notice the shifter rod on Dave’s trans. The rod is probably #34614-74 and according to my 1971–84 H-D catalog it was available for use on all the 1974–84 FX-series (FX, FXE etc) except the FXWG.

The FXE also had a shift lever that originally went through the inner primary cover and the chain inspection cover as opposed to the forward-mounted type of lever you may have now.

Thanks SBT. I'm going back to the shifter rod down behind the primary as opposed to straight back like on newer model bikes. I hated that reverse 1 up 3 down shifter pattern.
