Default Stock oil filter replaced by throwaway cartridge ?

I am doing an oil change on my 81 FXB Sturgis and found the what looks like original style oil filter

so I found the whole complicated construction with the washable oil filter. What I bought though is the throwaway element shown at the top of the picture. This is also the element I remember from my 82 FXB.

so can I just drop the modern throwaway style in, instead of the old filter ? The new element has a rubber ring around, for sealing, just like the old one. But does the new one need the rubber ring that is on the top of the old style ? I tried it and it does not make a logical fit. Looking at the whole system I would think it doesnt need it ? The rubber ring anound the filter element makes the seal between the return oil and the tank, the only way to the tank is through the filter...

Some machines that spring filter causes not only gaskets leaks but vent tube leaks

granted some bikes dont care - but some will let you know that was a mistake

buy the correct part flow filter invented before the paper ones were

I have to agree with Johnjzjz, I used to use those paper drop in filters they were CC Rider from Custom Chrome they had a built in bypass in the bottom and I was using 20W50 most of the time but I haven't seen any of those in a long time so I started using Drag Specialties version with no bypass valve and started having the very problems he mentions, it was intermittent, but at about the same time I started switching to straight 50 weight oil instead of 20w50 because I'm getting old and pretty much don't ride below 50 degrees much any more. Anyway I bought a PC RACING PC53-82 OIL FILTER stainless 35 micron washable, because it has a built in bypass and was on sale on Amazon, it's been almost 2 years and all stays dry and if it sits for say 2 months just maybe some misting from the cc vent on startup sometimes. So was it just the lack of a bypass on cold start up or in conjunction with straight weight oil. I don't know, didn't keep notes but I think a bypass valve is important. Just my 2 cent experience.

Better check the little strainer that filters the oil going up to the top end. When I got my shovel I checked mine and it looked like someone had stuffed a miniature tampon in that thing it was so full of the old style filter element.

I decided to put the modern filter in and to keep a close eye on it, as I have no alternative... I do run 20W50 so hope it will be fine. But why are these filters not sold with a pressure relieve valve ?
I checked and cleaned the strainer siff, it was clean.

but to get to the siff I had to take the ham can off... during which I dropped one of the three carb screws in the hosework of the engine (I was smart enough to pull the choke before starting this job, effectively blocking the intake). Couldnt find the screw anywhere, so took the right pedal assembly off. It was on the transmission mounting plate.

while here with the, ehum, original AMF carb exposd, I decided to adjust the idle up a bit. I gave it a quarter turn. All was fine in the beginning of my little testride around the Lindt Chocolate factory here on Lake Zurich. But as the engine temperature increased idle went up to 1200 rpm.

I managed because I have thin long fingers with just a screwbit, but how are you supposed to adjust the idle when there is so way of getting to this screw ?

PS I know the middle picture shows the idle up screw, not the normal idle screw. Just wanted to show the AMF Harley text on the carb.

When we do the engines in that type bike we leave the right side gas tank off and put 50 miles in it 10 - 20 and 20 or close to that

finesse the carb and most times its ready to go home

i know its a lot of work to do just that - so after the engine rebuild if it returns for running issues - we just remove the air filter as we made a bolt on to the carb only to the rocker box bracket and ride tune it on the road test usually 10 miles as those carb are a PITA at times

i have a metal post we made into a screw driver that is 3/4 of an inch long for the mix screw late carb

Been using the Perform drop in filters for years in several different bikes and never had any issues.

as for the adjust on the bendix or any carb - I run 6 gallon Bobs on an FLH - yeah - biagass 6 gals - like JZ said - you have to make special purpose screwdrivers for the carbs

Aaaaaand time for the next repair. Was puttering around today and the speedo stopped working. On closer in spection the housing of pickup unit on the front wheel has rotated about 1/8 of a turn. The tab that slots in the wheel was broken before but I fixed that with a hammer. Now the entire unit rotated... hope its not the front wheel bearings.

Put a new speedo drive unit in it and a cable - use a very light greas like white grease on the inner cable and pack some real grease in the drive

buy wheels seals and pull the bearings and re pack them its your life when they seize
