Oil pressure sensor
Hi Guys, sorry I have been MIA with this thread for to long. I started a new job and have been wrapped up in all of the fun nonsense that comes with that.
Anyways, I got a pressure gauge and put it in. It shows high pressure on start up like 50-55 psi.
I took it for a rip and maybe 2-3 miles into the ride my oil light pops on. I look down and it shows that I have 40 psi still. But there is a whine in the motor when the light pops on and it seems to get louder. I brought it home so maybe 5-6 miles total and am going to begin to look into this situation more.
Thoughts Ideas. Thanks in advance
the spec no one has the tooling but them so - its a slight drag with everything in place less the lifter blocks on the cam back and forth with no washer so it has movement to feel
- too loose it clicks too tight they whine
So at this point I am leaning towards disassembling my oil pump and and checking everything out inside.
Think maybe I should just try replacing the sensor?
I really don't want this motor to fail on me I just rebuilt it late last summer and only have about 200-250 Miles on it.
So I went for a ride this evening. After checking my oil pressure switch and redoing the connection.
- dummy light stayed on after starting the bike.
- I ignored said light because the gauge I installed showed 50 PSI
- dummy light shut off 300 yards down the road.
- I then went for a nice cruise on a horrible New England road.
- Sitting at a stop sign to turn onto a main road and head home the dummy light came back on.
- Still have 45psi on gauge
- I cruise home in 4th gear 50-65mph until my driveway
- Light never shut off.
I used the IR temp gun to temp the oil and it said 130*F seems legit?
I also took pictures of the Motor with a FLIR camera and well the damn battery died and I cant upload that until it charges but temp seemed even.
Should I pull my pump, at least the cover and get eyes on the inside?
Does this have something to do with the check valve or pressure plunger?
Still running straight 60wt
I am ordering a new Oil pressure switch which one will be my best choice or can I pick a good one up at one of the chain auto parts stores Napa, Pep Boys, Auto Zone etc...
Attached are two pictures both of the gauge and pump
Bike is not running
wow just wow - i do not know what to say
Harley oil pressure switches are low pressure switches — not car switches that are HI Pressure switches and you want to use one of those so the light might do the same thing — and in the middle you want to remove the out side cover of the oil pump only - Y - what will looking at two gears in the pump do for you

I will trust my gauge John. I will trust the Crappy **** Chinese gauge seeing how no one sells good **** anymore that doesn't cost a weeks pay. You are the first person to tell me that I have that type of oil pump.
So the China crap pressure switch might be wrong because i ordered it for a shovel back when i replaced it.
So possibly its been broken due to the increased pressures?
Replace it with an Evo switch?
Out of curiosity and for myself what makes you say that is an Evo pump? (my pressure readings? how it looks?) I only ask because we have spoke on this pump before in here on the forum and that has never been mentioned.
I would open it up to see if Maybe I sheared a rear key only and was not getting good oil return which would impede the oil flow in but not affect the pressure. Maybe there is a piece of **** stuck in there or something. I would pull it just to verify everything was ok.
John I love your knowledge and appreciate all of it and the time you take to educate someone like me from the younger generation so I can be the guy getting grumpy with the young pups one day about some old solid mount shovel
is it bad no does it work yes and yours happens to like it most shovels do not - be happy yours works
oil pressure switch for an evo is much longer then the shovel and mounts in the block in the main oil pressure feed passage
shovels switch is in the pumps pressure vane is that good it works for that pump
buy another shovel switch and if it still come on take the bulb out and a Advil pm so you can sleep at night
sarcasm is always freely given in the time of need - your going great just dont think you will ever have the oil pressure you think it should have because it wont
