Default Trans locked up !

So Friday, I went out on a short boot to get some lunch and just enjoy the nice weather. Bike was running great. Not pushing it at all. Traffic was a bit slow on my return and instead of passing and ending my ride sooner, I decided to pull into a rest stop for a drink of water. Now I can not say for certain that I was shifting into third or second, but, I had just started to turn off while shifting down and the rear tire locked up. The bike instantly low sided and the bike and I went for a slide, Pooched the derby cover, small abrasion on the outer primary, foot peg, and small hit to the front fender lower lip, Me, well , like a fool, I opted to go in my vest as it was super hot and I was just going to take it easy, Lost a bit of skin on my left elbow and tore up my cardharts, Trans is out and starting the tear down now, No metal flakes in the oil, found some teeth and some kind of spacer/shim ? Trans is still locked solid. Any words of wisdom before before I tear into it?
Pics of the tear down so far. Oh and kicker, side some pics, not sure if the bent metal is normal. And I do have the FSM, will be reading it first.

Yup, pull the shift forks then try to remove the countershaft cluster, it'll be pretty obvious what going on. I've had one seize up when the needle bearing cage gave out.

The bent metal (ramp) on the kicker gear is as it should be. It pushes the spring loaded engagement gear out of the way to disconnect the kicker at the top and bottom of its travel so you dont break your ankle.

Its in 2nd and third at the same time it seems to me

the clip is the 3rd gear clip well part of it

the counter shaft has to be pulled first the under the kicker stuff is 4 Allen bolts and remove the stay

you might have to beat it out if it seized the needle bearing — carefull dont miss and hit the trans case

Thank you for your responses. Just waiting on a deep socket to remove the sprocket (should have one here tonight) and will proceed as advised. And John , you are most likely right, Second and third at the same time. Must have been when shifting down into second gear. Will post up more pics as I tear it down.

I had one lock up too. Lost a couple of teeth off a gear and it wedged itself between other gears and blew the trans case completely in half dumping the oil in front of the rear tire and sliding i went. So much oil i could push the bike with the wheel locked up. Mine required a completely different trans to rebuild to get it back on the road.
I agree, pull the shift forks and that will tell the story of what you got. Sorry you went down . Be glad it didn't happen at a higher speed.

Tx hardheaded, sorry to hear you were not so lucky.
Ok, counter shaft is out. Shaft looks good, no marks that I can see.

Pretty sure the bearing cap was pooched by the punch driving the counter shaft out, needle bearing all clean and good condition.

I'm willing to bet these last two picks show the issue, but I could be wrong. That gear I believe should not be able to slide and the part of a retaining ring, that John identified, holds that in place,
So what do you guys think is the best move forward? Complete gear set or just replace the damaged gears. I will need at least one bearing and a retaining ring. Look forward to your thoughts

Need to get that mainshaft between a set of centers and runout checked, you can't do it a local machine shop can quick & easy. Can't tell which happened first but the retainer ring for 3rd gear is what's in the first batch of pictures with the broken teeth fragments. I suspect for whatever reason it gave it up, 3rd floated sideways engaged the already locked in shift dog and blew out the torrington bearing the countershaft cluster when the gear teeth grenaded.

Sucks but you are probably looking at a whole gear set and maybe a mainshaft. Seen them warp from that kind of hit before.
