just bought laced wheels for my 82 fxe build. Manual says no spacer on right side. What keeps the caliper from eating away at the seal in the hub? Is it because it doesn’t have a washer and snap ring? Which still seems odd to me you’d think there would be a lot of friction between the hub and caliper. What am I missing? Do I need to machine a spacer?

Depends on the Wheel... what are they off from?? some laced wheels...the spacer is actually Part of the Wheel assembly... not separate..
Holding the Caliper hanger to the wheel will tell ya what you Need!!
Should be a short spacer already inside the seal against the bearing, doesn't stick out much past it the seal lip and goes tight against the caliper mount, that's the big cast one if I remember right.
Okay so what am I missing? This build got put on hold for 5 years and I’m finally trying to get this done! Don’t mind the rusty old parts I only installed so I can mock everything up. The caliper bracket hit the rotor without a spacer..but I can’t put a spacer between the rotor and caliper because it wouldn’t allow it to float. Any advice?
No Not really.. on the old Spokers the small spacer...(part of the wheel assembly) #23/45 went Under the seal like...

These.. what OP shows looks to me like an aftermarket Wheel assembly...which probably did Not come with All of the pieces... because there is No provision for the Snap Ring, which held it all together.. Or.. Later model "stuff"
Matters Not
One of the spacers the twizted one shows will function.. even if the Lip is In, vs Out!! Or Bassackwards.. spacers is spacers..
