Starter spins when connecting battery
BTW the Cheap aftermarket handlebar switch for Pre-1973 cannot be relied upon to Fire the Ford Style Starter relay Either... need a Quality Button..
Ain't Magic.. each part needs to be able to Handle the Current required to complete the intended operation!!
Moral??? Use Chiwanese Electric components at your own Risk..
Made it to the shed today armed with wiring diagrams and enthusiasm
Studied hard to find out I think I have 82-84 wiring in some places so I'm hoping that won't be a problem
Cleaned up all the battery/starter/solenoid cable ends and checked for any looseness (if that's a real word) in the connectors - all seems good
During the rebuild, I replaced the starter gear shift lever (31445-65A) and looks like I put the spring in the wrong spot, so swapped that around (I think I have it right now) and the solenoid seemed to go back in its spot a lot easier and snug against the primary so hopefully that helps as well
I'll pick up a ford style relay during the week, fit it up and see what happens
I've also put the battery on my bigger charger just to make sure thats not my problem
Thanks for all your input

This Aint Rocket Science...and Guess what... Contary to Oh so Many Keyboard Engineers... H-D Engineers really did a great Job, especially considering the "cost cutting" factor..
Proof???? How many Stock systems are out there still functioning Perfectly??? Till Chiwanese Parts and Would be, Mechanics, are introduced!!!!!
ie, the starter circuit, the ignition circuit, the charging circuit, lighting etc etc, and do one circuit at a time so ya less likely to get confused,
I think the biggest problem with the starter system is the MOCO cobbeled/lashed it together from car or truck parts instead of designing & fitting a simple bespoke starter that worked 100% reliably,
and although they can & does work most of the time if set up & maintained regularly, it isnt the greatest system,
over the years I have had more problems with the starter system in one way or another on Shovels than with anything else on a Harley,... so on my last & probably final build, I splashed out the dosh for a Cannonball 'Stealth Starter' from W&W in Germany,...
a lovely bit of kit that works through the kicker mech on the right side of the transmission,
it uses a modern 2kw starter & relay solenoid, works great, spins it fast & hasn't let me down since fitting it 2-3 yers ago now,..
an added bonus is I run an open 3'' Karata primary belt & it doesnt need or use an ugly ring gear on the basket or an outrigger bearing for the factory starter, bolts on behind & b
elow the trans & is hardly seen when fitted with the Kicker still being able to be used if ya want,...,...
