Default Starter would not disengage...

I'm working on my '66 Shovel trying to straighten out some of the wiring. I wired a circuit breaker in like the schematic shows for a 1969 FL. I went to start it to go around the block for a road test and the starter motor would not disengage.
I had to run and get some tools to disconnect the battery as the starter would not disengage it just kept on cranking, I left the hot side of the circuit breaker off the pos. battery post.
I know there was a retrofit kit for early shovelheads.
I bought a 30-amp? breaker from JP and hung it off the bottom of the battery box.
I ran the wires one to the battery term on the voltage regulator and the other to the battery pos. terminal. Now the question is the circuit breaker garbage, or did something go wrong else ware??
Bike is stock and looks like somebody who thought they were a mechanic had their hands on it. I'm trying to get things back to what the factory intended.

I suspect John will check in with his schematic on wiring the starter. Or you could do a forum search and find it. It’s been covered many times. I’m certainly no expert but the circuit breaker is to protect the wiring in the event of a direct short. Starter run on isn’t a short. You might also check your solenoid to insure that the washers aren’t welded to the posts.

The circuit breaker has nothing to do with the problem.

What type starter relay are you using?

A weak battery or poor electrical connection can cause this issue, among other things.

Charge the battery, and take it to an auto parts store and have it load tested.

Remove both battery cables, clean the terminals and the surfaces they connect to.

Doing it this way you will never see this happen again

but if you insist on another idea you will need this bottle instead

Dan 89. I might have a weak battery. It cranked a little slow on first attempt. I have it on charge since last night. I will run a load test on it when it's charged. As for the relay, It's the stock metal one that's under the battery box.

FL54 I'll put that on the list of to do It can't hurt to look.
John JZJZ I'll get a relay and try it out. Where can I buy the bottle of smoke??? I might need to keep some in stock. LOL
Thank you Gentlemen I will update this as I try to solve this problem.

The set up i send leaves no power at the solenoid on the primary when the button is not pressed - this will stop the run on no matter what to the starter

Just a quick thought..did you remember to put the washer on the end of the starter shaft before installing the outer primary cover?

Panz Yes I installed the washer that goes on the starter shaft. I have a later outer primary with a removable derby cover on at the moment along with the starter shaft extension in case I need to get at the clutch adjustment. I have the original outer primary with the screw cap to grease the compensating sprocket that will go back on when I'm sure I've gotten the clutch sorted out.
