Speaking of which, the correct coil for the Dyna S is 5 ohm if you choose to go with one. (3 ohm won't last)

Did you put a different "magic box" on it???
Later today I will dig out a Box, and get a photo of the Support I have here for an S&S, using a strap from the bottom corner of Rocker Box..... unless you go like this

Which I use alot also.. but Not with Spigot Carbs (CV etc) using this S&S Kit

Hi all update on my fxr,its been running great the last few times out.The tank had a cream liner it so I removed that as it was peeling.I put a new pick up & rotor on it,the rotor was all rusty & the plate looked rough as well. The carb was next,it had a 75 slow speed jet so I put in a 72.This was recommended to me by a friend wo works on carbs.I left the main jet at 165.I set the air fuel mixture & bingo its running great.By the way the carb is the stock keihin. The stock air box was put on & properly supported.Iam using a unifilter soaked in oil, just wondering if k&n or someone else makes a filter for it.Overall very happy with the progress.I want to thank everyone who chimed in to give me advice.I will add some pics.

It's an opinion thing but just saying...

I went back to a Uni on my '87 this spring and couldn't be happier (except for the oily mess when handling). Got tired of the carb throat, intake and head ports being nasty black with a K&N. Cleaned them up and went with Uni, still clean after 5500 miles last I looked. Seems like it picked up a 1.5 - 2 mpgs but won't swear to it.

Full disclosure - with the shape/style of my filter and air box, the KN foam seal on the carb side rots quickly and on the cover side, it's too flimsy to hold the element snug against the back plate. That's why my junk stayed nasty - it didn't filter correctly due to poor materials causing poor fit (seal).

Uni foam was the factory type (and mfg) for many years until '91. You won't be disappointed if you run it. Just don't over service it and the foam will rot after a number of years, speaking from memory of my factory original.

Never seen any Black with my K&N's quite the opposite...always cleaner
No Foam anywhere on any K&N I use... including in Stock Airbox(s)... rubber!!
Foam has Always rotted worse than any material I have ever used..
I understand reluctance to let yer motor breath... because K&N always demands different jetting...certainly adding Foam vs K&N will result in a very Fat mix!!!
I use K&N on Everything on the farm... from Lawn tractor to Big Truck Cummins!!! All Of 'em!!!!Expensive...But, Worth it!!
Paper is for writing Notes...Foam (sponge) is for washing yer Bike, K&N makes Air Filters....
Use what ya want....IDC

EDIT; My '82 FXRS has had a K&N since 1984...The Same One!!!!

Here's some pics

Stock airbox

This is where I did some surgery on the tank.I cut the part under the console to peel the liner out.

This is what I removed.I went ahead and welded the tank back. All good not even noticeable.

Getting it ready for welding.

All back together & looking good.Maybe I didn't have to go this route but I just couldn't see getting it out without the surgery.I read about the acetone & various other ways but for me this was the easiest. Also when I was done I went with the electrolysis to clean any rust & actually it was clean.I don't know why they used the cream liner, maybe because he quit riding the bike & wanted to preserve the tank.I didn't put a liner in it,just filled it up with non ethonal gas for the Winter.Ran all the gas out of carb.

Yes racepress It is an fxr EA in the vin.The previous owner must have added the cast wheels.I am using the original supports for the airbox. They attach to the rocker cover.
