Hi all I just purchased an 82 fxr.The bike starts great & idles well for about a mile and starts coughing & will die,but will start right up.So I am in the process of rebuilding the carb.In the meantime I checked out the points and I have none,so I took pictures of what I have & maybe Y'all can enlighten me.Any information about this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
That's a pickup sensor for the electronic ignition module,if it's like my early '84 the module is under one of the side covers, right side if memory serves but don't hold me to it.
You might want to upgrade to one of these: https://www.fxrdivision.com/fxr-wiri...gnition-module

While it's idling give a couple quick little shots of brake clean to the intake clamps and the carb to manifold mount block, Suspect intake leaks at least as I'm not seeing any carb or air cleaners supports on her.

Support is Critical on a RubberGlide... Make sure the previous "mechanic" used the proper Clamps on that (should be) rubberband Intake!
When my '82 Ignition failed...it did it slowly, and the Rev Limit function failed first... then the failure was much like you are experiencing... I used an Ironhead EI magic box on mine... Loved it!!! Cheap, fast, and No Mechanical advance to worry over..
Seeing more and more FXR (EA) paint jobs on FXRS (EB), mag wheel bikes... ..,.starting to wonder if the Old Rule of Thumb was even legit on Shovel FXR's??
Of course they claimed mine was (EB) 2-tone paint!!!!

Nice Have you looked in the tank, failed liner will do that. Prob ignition like already mentioned but pull the petcock and clean the gas filter. I would also drain the oil tank and clean that out to, not related to your problem but good to do on a "new" to you bike.
