I can believe that, that boss and the entire mount crossmember is a cast piece. All I've run across look like they were sawed off as an afterthought. The angle left over on the frame has been different on every one of them. At a guess from past stuff I've done for production at car plants I'd say batch lots got taken to the bandsaw in the maintenance shop and trimmed before going to the line for assembly.

They have a flat bar stock welded across frame just above the upward curve with 2 threaded hole's to mount the highway bars too.

I guess it makes sense that the MoCo would Drop that boss along with the introduction of the FXS..1977! Yet reintroduce on the "new" FXWG! 1980..

I think that the common thought back then was the MOCO removed the boss to keep people from faking Low Riders, but don't know that to be fact. I know that I passed on many a 1977 FX/FXE because of no boss. Pennsylvania Inspection stations frowned heavily on welds on motorcycle or car frames. Guys would title and register them at Ohio friend's addresses back then.

Actually, by my study, those are Castings (cast steel) that the Tubes "plug into" and then are welded to the tubes... But...yes... No Provision for Highway pegs on FXE after ??? what year??? I dunno...and, at that same time was the Pogo weldments eliminated??? I know that by 1982, they were eliminated...

My 1978 1/2 FXE did not have the tab. I had one welded on many years ago.
