Aluminum I agree. But there is nothing at all wrong or bad to use stainless steel or steel. That is not true at all to say that theres anything stainless or steel is bad for a drain plug. Id love for you to tell me why you think this. Or where you read this so I can see it too. Only way to learn is from each other. 🙏
Paul, I just did some serious research and made some phone call to some heavy hitters in this industry. I am sorry to inform you that your belief in stainless steel or even plain steel has any sort of negative or adverse defect. They are not perfectly safe to use. No questions asked. Aluminum is the no go. You had me second guessing myself. I had never heard that before ever. Im glad I could clear up the misinformation you received.
I feel so much smarter now. You are correct. Never even thought about the ironhead and shovelhead. They were before my time. lol. Started in 82 first dirt bike. Born in 72. And to get one now its expensive as f*ck for a pos one. Joe you are correct for those motors and any other cast iron cases equipped motors. Joe12RK youve taught me something and for that I thank you. 🙏
Boatbuilders use stainless fittings on Aluminum boats because they are compatible and don't cause electrolysis.
I just away when this stuff starts, where the internet is a bad thing, information overload. Stainless and aluminum have been working partners industrially for as long as Ive been getting my hands dirty.
For me anyway, the best way is to pull the transmission, gut it, have the drain plug hole filled, drill and retap hole for 1/8-27 NPT with a magnetic drain plug. Those original thread holes are most likely really worn out and things like teflon tape and pipe top are not going to solve your problem in the long run. Another option is to use an oversize plug. Places like V-Twin sells them.

Is that transmission case painted or some kind of soda blast ? Metal shot ?
