Default Head bolts

Here's another head scratcher. I was torqueing the head bolts down on my 82 shovel and the washer split at 35 ft pound's. I used never seize on the bolts. Is this not good or should I have used oil? I dont think I hurt the threads because the bolt back out just like the others. Are stock washers not as good as colonies?

Did you oil the head bolt washers before assembly? you should do that as it stops false torque readings and other bad things.

Oh yeah. I oiled both sides of each washer. I set my torque wrench to step up settings so that I didn't take a chance on torqueing one too much more than another. I was concerned about the never seize. The factory manual says that what you are supposed to use. I didn't know if anybody out there had any problem with it before.

I don't think the use of never seize vs. oil will make 35ft-lbs incorrect enough to split a washer. I think it's just a bad washer.

That's what I am hoping. I replaced it with a washer that came with some other head bolts I bought a while and it torqued down without any trouble. Thanks..

For anyone who's interested I managed to get the rest of the head bolts in just fine.
