'79 FLH Refresh
What started out as a top end rebuild has turned into a bigger project as I keep finding more things that need to be addressed.
The cylinders need to be bored but the wear marks look straight and vertical, so it seems like the rods are probably straight. The heads need a full valve job and I am planning on new valves, guides and springs. What are the best seals for the intake valves?
I pulled the oil tank to clean it out and saw where the transmission top plate has been welded up. I plan on replacing the plate so the trans is coming out and will get rebuilt. I have a buddy who has the tool to set the shift forks when I get to that point.
There was a pretty bad oil leak between the trans and inner primary so I'm wondering if the bushing is going to need replacing on the mainshaft/high gear? How difficult is the bushing installation and sizing?
I also found the inner primary is cracked, possibly wasn't installed correctly in the past, so I am looking for an inner. Am I likely for find a good used one or should I just bite the bullet and go new?
Since I am this deep I plan to replace the alternator with an upgrade. Any suggestions on a good unit?
I recently picked up a 2010 XR 1200 so I am still riding HD regularly but really want to get the FLH back on the road.
