Thanks. I need to find out which spring set the mechanic put it. Lighter springs may be the solution.

Is it the complete clutch kit with hub and all or the OEM style using stock parts and springs? The all in one with diaphragm spring plate is the no go unit, factory style is just a matter of doing the trap setup and adjustment in order, that’s the trick with a mousetrap, follow the steps don’t skip any.

I don't understand all the talk; for example, those who had a mousetrap clutch on their old Early Shovelhead rode it around the country, and those who didn't want that anymore converted to a "mousetrap eliminator". It'll take maybe 30 minutes, certainly no more.

But of course there were also the other HD chopper riders who loaded their old HD onto a trailer every 6 months and drove to the Suck company in Hamburg for an oil change, to have the chain tensioned, etc. They were really cool bikers, but internally these people were ridiculed or even pitied. We didn't even have good tools and messed up a lot, but we always learned from our mistakes – the best lesson.
Our friend Sigi always ran his 1937 U Flathead on used motor oil, and we cobbled around with metric tools on the old bikes; we simply couldn't afford imperial tools. But somehow we got the old machines running, eventually....
Attached photo from the early 1970s, Mike with a wire brush on a 45" from the Netherlands, these half-destroyed Harleys from old stock cost less than 1200,- Deutsche Mark and came directly from a scrap container, but we bought these remains and made them rideable again.
Those were the best years, we were young and carefree, and it was the dream, the dream called Harley Davidson.

A good weekend to all of you, wherever you are!

Mike

Happy Spring! I just wanted to follow up on my pre-winter post and say I decided the mousetrap was not the best solution whether it worked on my '76 shovel or not, having read that the lever pull then becomes sort of a two-stage pull as the MT spring engages. I think we all want a smooth pull (no pun intended). I contacted Rivera Primo to find out which diaphragm spring I had and they said I could tell by the color:
  • Black – Stock Performance
  • Silver – Street Performance
  • Gold – Racing Spring
Sure enough I had the silver, so I order the black for $39.99. It made a huge difference! Clutch is great now. Thanks again for all the feedback!

You might need an instagram account to view this, and I you've solved your problem, but this might be a future solution for future reference. It's not a new idea, but I thought it was relevant.
You use the foot clutch & jockey shift for actual riding & shifting, the hand lever purely for stopping at lights, junctions etc.....
