The oil pump is thw heart of your motor, if you can find an OEM pump in Very Good condition for a good price you can go that way,...
Me, I bought an S&S Pump & the drilling jig and its perfect, I also bought a JBROSG oil Filter oil pump end cover, so the oil is filtered directly after leaving the pump, a great upgrade,
one thing i'd avoid like the plague is the SIFTON pump, as they are no longer SIFTON, Tiawan Ted & his V-TWIN MFG bought SIFTON and the quality now is *****,..as per all things he produces

.

I like your setup there with the filter but I don't think it would fit my bike. I have much less room between the engine and trans.

I ran one that was far worse than that on my Ironhead for 3 years, I sold the bike 15 years ago and that pump is still on it.

I pulled the oil tank yesterday and was definitely not happy with what I found. There was at least a 1/2" or sparkly sludge at the bottom of it. At this point, with all the other crap I've found wrong with this bike I have no confidence that the bottom end of the motor is going to last. Everything feels tight but I'm not sure for how long. I have a local guy I'm going to contact to see if he can do all the bottom end bearings, but if he can't I'm gonna stick that pump back in and wrap it up for now and see what happens. I have plenty of other bikes to ride so I'll be gentle to it while I gather all the tooling I need to do it myself next winter. I have plenty of other projects I need to get to and this thing is really holding me up now. The damage is on the scavenge side. The oil light never came on or flickered and the gears all look good so you might be onto something.

Hi Pete,
thank you for the interesting photo of the "JBROSG oil Filter oil pump end cover", I wasn't familiar with this set, but it makes a good impression.
Videos about the assembly process can also be found online.

One further question is surely permissible: is the camshaft cover from the company "Burkhardt" still available new, or only as a used part?
Which magneto ignition would be suitable, Morris or Hunt? That would be another question...
Everything looks very "clean" in your photo. Is the oil filter a shorter version, and replaceable, with the built-in gearbox?

So many questions! How wonderful that there are forums like this with so many experts who know the right answer to every question...
Edit: One question remains, though: is it useful to have the oil filter so close to the engine? Wouldn't it be better, as is usually the case, to cool the oil filter specifically, as in the well-known aftermarket kits?

Mike

IF IT IS A SHOVELHEAD IT WILL FIT,... THEY EVEN USE HD FILTERS
,... HOWEVER, I'M NOT SURE IF MID CONTROLS ARE USEABLE, i RUN FORWARD CONTROLS,..
I MADE THE FINNED HEAT SINK SLIP ON, TO HELP WITH ANY HIGHER TEMPS, SO FAR ITS ALL FINE,..
YES THE FILTER WILL JUST UNSCREW , IT IS CLOSE, BUT HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO FIT ,
THE BODY ALSO ALLOWS FOR THE OIL HOSES TO BE HIDDEN UNDER THE TRANSMISSION,...
IN MY HUMBLE OPINION HARLEY SHOULD HAVE DONE THIS THEMSELVES.
I USE MORRIS MAGNETO, RARE EATH MAGNET MAGNETOS, A BETTER SPARK & I THINK THEIR QUALITY IS FAR GREATER THAN HUNT'S,
BURKHARDT MAG COVERS ARE AVAILABLE NEW, BUT ARE REPO'S BY V-TWIN MFG, HAD I KNOWN I'D HAVE GONE FOR A DIFFERENT MAKE AS IT TOOK A FAIR BIT OF WORK INCLUDING WELDING OF A BURST THROUGH HOLE ON THE CRANK FEED GALLERY,.. OTHERWISE NOT TOO BAD FOR A TIAWAN TED PRODUCT

I'm sure it will fit on the engine but I wouldn't be able to put my transmission in. The frame on the FLT is totally different. The engine and transmission are bolted together with a bracket. I don't have that downtube between them. The sender unit is on an angle so it clears if that tells you anything.

People do all kinds of things that were not intended to be done by the factory -

the oem filter is a part flow - part flow for a reason dont care what your Toyota has at 200,000 miles - the OP has found all kinds of bearish in the oil tank and the pick up for the pump is up off the bottom not because they thought is was better looking that way —- its a tractor engine treat it like that most did until the 80s came along and anyone with couple machines and no work invented $hit to sell does it work they didn’t care - it was shiny AND chrome so they sold them

I dont install chrome that was not on from Harley we put the bike out in the driveway with out those parts what ever they are - everyone knows i am woke and primarily concerned about their feelings ——- yea right

So are you're saying it's not uncommon to find sparkly stuff in the bottom of the oil tank? I know they get sludge in there but I would have figured the filter would remove most of the particles. Do the bottom ends usually make some warning noises before a catastrophic failure or do they typically just detonate? A lot of what I found may have come from the primary. I know what a magnet usually looks like when you pull it from an auto trans in a car. Like I said, the bottom end feels tight and it rotates smoothly. Today I'll put a dial indicator on the flywheels and shaft to see if there's any run out and I'll also put my stethoscope near the bearings and spin it to see if I hear any noise.
