Do the bottom ends usually make some warning noises before a catastrophic failure or do they typically just detonate? A lot of what I found may have come from the primary. I know what a magnet usually looks like when you pull it from an auto trans in a car. Like I said, the bottom end feels tight and it rotates smoothly. Today I'll put a dial indicator on the flywheels and shaft to see if there's any run out and I'll also put my stethoscope near the bearings and spin it to see if I hear any noise.
dont over think it they run for many years like you have with out cleaning the tank - we do it in the shop because of what you found - if the lower unit is snug like you found just treat it right and it will let you know when its time - again its a tractor like a bottle of jack when the last shot is gone you know

I have a local guy I'm going to contact to see if he can do all the bottom end bearings, but if he can't I'm gonna stick that pump back in and wrap it up for now and see what happens. I have plenty of other bikes to ride so I'll be gentle to it while I gather all the tooling I need to do it myself next winter. I have plenty of other projects I need to get to and this thing is really holding me up now. The damage is on the scavenge side. The oil light never came on or flickered and the gears all look good so you might be onto something.
Flush and ride it, if it never dies then great, if it does, well, you were considering rebuilding it anyway.

Ok, I did do some measuring and it's all within spec. I also listened to it with the stethoscope and didn't hear any roughness in the main bearings. I'm gonna button it up when my cam shims come and let 'er rip. And, hopefully it rips and not R.I.P.'s

True. I have AAA and they'll tow any of my vehicles up to 100 miles so that's not really a concern. I'm more concerned about fragging the cases if it does go. That's why I was asking about warning signs. I'm pretty easy on my old girls so it'll probably be fine. It's not a huge deal to get the engine out of it again if need be. Thanks fellas.
