Default new forward controls, dot 3 and dot 5 ??

hi, i recently bought some forward controls. the new master cylinder says use only dot 5 and my old master cylinder says only dot 3. if i dissassemble and completely flush the dot 3 from the system can i then put dot 5 into it or do i have to replace the rubber line and change seals in the caliper?

You have to make sure you do a very good flush. Best idea is to use the same as what your handle bar master is using. If the new master cylinder has never had fluid in it you don't have to worry about continuing with DOT3.

Hello,

You need to replace your seals and cups when you change to DOT5. Take no chance, the DOT5 is very different then the DOT3 and your seals are full with DOT3. When you don't change you can end up braking and not stopping because the seals are teared up.

Replacing seals is an easy job and will also give you the opportunity to clean the calipers inside, with DOT3 there will be some material.

I concur with Bootsy. A qwik refresher, DOT 5 is a silicone based fluid. DOT 3 is not. DOT 3 has an affinity for water (it absorbs it). DOT 3 was recommended to be changed and flushed every 2 yrs, this was to cut down on corrosion (rust) in the brake system. Using DOT 5 eliminates this procedure and thus reduces the chance of any corrosion in the system. If you do attempt to mix the 2, it causes a real gummy mess. (Please don't ask) Use brake cleaner to flush lines, etc when changing over. and clean all parts good b4 reassembly. And when you're all done, take a brake. (Couldn't pass it up)
