Default 82 FXE advice

I am interested in picking up a shovel but i am just learning about them. I did come across one locally which is pretty clean, 82 FXE with 22,000. They want 7,900 for it which i thought was high. It appears to run well but looking for some advice on what to look for and any production years to stay away from. I dont mind getting my knuckles a little bloody but dont want a bunch of frustration either. Any insight is appriciated.

Ithink 7-9K is fair for a nice shovel, with the FLs being closer to 9K and the FXs closer to 7K.I paid $6500 for my 1981 FXE, it had 500 miles on a rebuilt motor, and only 10,000 miles on the bike total. I personally like the late model shovels such as a 82. They did make some improvements over the years. I also like the electric and kick starter combo rather then only kickstart.Always ask the seller for receipts if the bike has engine work on anything else that can not been seen. You can expect the bike to leak. May leak oil and also will leak tranny fluid. This is not a big deal as long as the leaks are slow, seapage type leaks. I would look at all rubber really well, hoses, tires and other rubber may need to be replaced. There are a ton of aftermarket parts for these bikes and they are very easy to work on. A goodclean and well tuned carbcan really make these bike run very very well.Have fun!

Bogley is one of several of my shovelmentors... and I have found that he knows his stuff....I kick my bike just to be sure it is running right, but like Bogleysaid, electric is great for hot starts, etc.I paid $6,700 for my FLHS (thanksBogley you made my day) with 5,000 miles on the secondbuild and 100,000 total miles, but what I liked: 1.It was from the original owner, 2. Matching motor and VIN, 3. Like Bogley said all the rubber components were near new in condition, 4. It was cleaner than three or four with a fourththe miles, 5. Never a drop of oil yet and I even gave it a chance to leak by going full synthetic in the tranny and motor ( I stay with HD Formula + in the primary)5. It was an FLH priced right, 6.I like they way it looked and it was a late model shovel (1981).....

Good luck

Hello Hogback,
It has been a while since we have talked. Sounds like you got one he11 of a deal on thatFL.Iforgot to mention thematching VIN, yes very important if you want a orginal. One more thing I thought of, the later shovels are 80 ci and the early engines we 74 ci.
