Default Turn Signal Won't Flash

New here, so this is my first post. I recently rebuilt a 1980 FLT from top to bottom, front to back as a mild custom and I am quite pleased with the result. I haven't even broken in the motor because the weather here has not been adequate for riding. So here's the deal. Before I tore apart the bike, the turn siganls would illuminate but not flash. Yes, this is an early model which requires the button to be held down in order to get them to blink. After rewiring the entire bike and replacing the flasher module along with new handlebar controls, same thing. Lights come on steady with the switch depressed but no blink. Both front and both rear lamps illuminate steady with the button pressed and the hazard flashers work. I have checked the wiring against the factory diagram and it is correct. Anybody run into something like this before?

Welcome to the HDForum Gitguy,
Looks like you did a very nice job on the bike.
I would guess the problem with the blinks are still in the flasher or wiring not correct.
I don't know how oem wiring is done I simply use a 2 wire flasher. power to the flasher which feeds power to the switches.

a turn signal flasher is like a circuit breaker that trips under a load and auto resets (flashes). the left - right turn signal is 2 bulbs (the least load) and 4 bulbs for the emergency flasher (the greatest load). this would explain why the emergency flashers are working and the turn signals are not. Things to check for would be the correct bulbs, clean sockets that the bulbs go into, a good ground at the socket and if all else fails, you can switch to an automobile style low watt flasher. Hope this helps. Good luck.

I can't remember the #s but you can get hotter bulbs that will make the flasher work for you. Been there.....

When I rebuilt my 83' FXE, I didn't want to have to hold the button down to get the turn signals to flash, so I removed the old flasher unit, and installed a badlands flasher module. Now I push the button and I get 9 sec. of flashes. If I hold in both buttons, I get emergency flashers just like the newer bikes. The badlands module is simple to install, and it also works as a load equalizer for LED lamps. The can be found at any decent bike shop. Most likely they would have to order it. You could also try shopping on line for one. We've got a real good local shop here, where I was the Parts Manager for some time, so I don't purchase much on line.

I haveused automotive type flashers units with great results. Usually plugs right in to your flasher sockets. Cheap and easy!!
Good luck!!!
