Welcome to the HDforum 1bad..
you had a valve job done and new rings and pistons along with a bore oversize?
your doing what needs to be checked out.
Exhaust valve to tight
timing not set correctly
ignition falure of some sort
not getting enough fuel {lean condition}
then worst case bent exhaust valve
when you say the engine starts dose it start and run but back fire all of the time {every revolution of the engine} or only a few times?
I'm curious what bore and stroke to get the 96 Cu In?
what carburetor you running?

Inspect your coil closely to see if there is a crack around one of the posts, replace the condenser.

3 5/8 bore 4 5/8 stroke = 95.5 CI or 96

It usually is the simple things!
with an intake leak it may also be difficult to keep a steady low idle.
