I am going to begin restoring my 83 FXDG in October. \\; I have never done a restore and would like to know what tools you would reccomend so I can negin getting ready for this epic undertaking. \\; Any advice?
I don't know what your term refurb covers. These are items I used for
a 1980. Some of the tools I think you will need.
1 \\; Jamb bars, and chain locks for the primary chain, and drive chain.
2 \\; Special socket needed to remove, and torque the trans nut holding the chain drive
 \\; \\; \\; sprocket to the transmission.
3 \\; A 1/2" 2 foot \\; bar to remove the compensator nut \\; on primary chain.
4 \\; I \\; also had to have a 2' extension for the \\; 2' \\; bar. \\;
5 \\; Check on a \\; removal of front forks
6 \\; Torque wrench
 \\; \\; There are other tools I just made. These would be for removal and installation of
 \\; \\; bearings races seals. There are others here much more knowledgeable than I am.
 \\; \\; They will probably have a lot to add. Good Luck. \\;
A bike jack is indispensable
Be organized: I use those big plastic totes, zip locks, and smaller container for small parts make lots of note and take pictures throughout your build.
I am going to try to minimalize the engine work. \\; However, I do wish to repaint and repowdercoat the engine. \\; I am unsure how much engine work I will need to do to have the engine powdercoated.
Thanks for your help on the tools.
