I'm restoring a 68 FLH, well resurrecting. Motor had to be bored .020 over and raised the compression 1 point over stock. Heads have had the lead free valve job and cam is an Andrews G I believe. Like 2 steps over a stock cam...nothing crazy. I need a carb. When I stared buying parts back in 2001/2002 I picked up an Edelbrock Quicksilver in a deal but still new in a box. After doing some research lately I don't think I want to mess with that carb. Let's hear some suggestions. One guy told me to get a S&S and another said Bendix.
It's not going to be racing it. Just want something dependable with decent performance.
If you want to use the stock aircleaner, the Bendix with the adjustable mainjet is a good choice. I put a CV on my 72 and I'm pretty happy with it(espeicially since I only paid 35.00 for it.) It's really up to you on what you want to do. If you want performance S&S.
S&S will give you "no" problems, looks period custom too. I have a super "B" on my pan, and a "E" on my evo, both have been very reliable, and completely trouble free.
OK, not opposed to a Super B. They obviously don't make them. What's the average price on picking up a used one? Are different jet sizes readily available? I found rebuild kits cheap enough.
I bought one a few months ago for $35, it needed rebuilding (throttle shaft rebushed etc.) sold it for $200. with the shorty around, the B's are really cheap.
jet's are the same as the E. I love the "B" just got to get used to not having a accl. pump.
I run a quicksilver and love it my buddy is takeing off a s+s e to put on a quick silver he hates the dead spot on his e. The bendix you can adjust while you are traveling down the road. it is a real plus if you ride in the mountans. The s+s e has alot of jet combos only a real gear head could tune. The quicksilver has a metering rod that is impossible to adjust without removing the carb or right fuel tank I know mine is a little rich don't know if it is worth the trouble to adjust. All carbs work great if properly adjusted.
S&S "B" for a 74-80" at sea level main .070-.072 pilot .031-.034 "E" main .070-.072 pilot .028-.031
if there is a dead spot, mod the air bleed to take a smaller orfice. I drill and tap the air bleed to take a S&S main jet try a .068. it quickens the transfer from the pilot to main jet circuits. try it it works!
