This Rigid frame shovel head with a 56 pan bottom end had been apart for many years and is now back together once again.
After a rebuild by someone who must have left something loose in the timing gear side IE the the distributor gear shaft. Things went bad in a hurry. This was over 5 years ago and the bike mostly sat until early this summer. I encourage the owner to tare it down and fix the thing.
It took some machining and all new shafts, gears and distributor along with a very close look at the shimming of the timing cover, cam ect. we got the engine back together and running yesterday. The smile on the owners face when he took it for a test ride after many years of sitting in his garage was worth all of the time and effort involved..
It sure sounds good!! http://picasaweb.google.com/rodwgregg/20080907Nils#
One of the biggest puzzlers for us when we were putting the timing side together was getting the after market parts to fit and shim correctly.
After comparing the new distributor gear to the old one I found that the small distributor gear wasn't pressed on the shaft toward the drive gear, it wasn't much but enough for the gears to contact one another. It took quite a bit of pressure once I put it in my press. It seems to never fail when I don't compare new parts to the old ones I should have!
What a lousy turn of events my Buddy had!!
We spent several weekends getting both of his bikes running, a few months ago his 80 80 needed a total rebuild of the transmission and engine. We got that taken care of a month ago and went on to the Chopper project. We got the chopper tuned day before yesterday and yesterday while he was on his 80 going home for lunch a 17 year old girl ran him over and wiped out his right foot and bike of course. He was in surgery last night and they were able to save his foot but he may loose a toe but won't be sure until next week and more surgery. This is a real bummer it has been many years since he's had both bikes up and running at the same time for it to only last one day!!
It's going to be a very long time before he will be able to kick start the chopper...
