I need a favor. I have a custom frame with an OEM early fatbob tank. Most of the mounting tabs on the frame are broken off. I can weld on new ones, but I have no idea how this tank is supposed to bolt up!
It looks like there are three mount points, one set top front, one set bottom front, and the rear mount point. The top front mount is still fine, but do the front bottom tank tabs bolt together to a single frame tab or is there a spacer between the tank tabs? and the rear mounts (bolt holes in the tank) currently mount to nothing.
Pictures might help, I will post what I have if someone can post what they are supposed to look like.
I now see how the front lower mount is supposed to be, and fixing it will be simple. However the rear mount is not like the catalog...it is simply two tabs sticking up, one on either side of the frame and a bolt running through the tab and out into the tank side. I can reweld those tabs, but is there a rubber spacer or anything there (I could not tell in the catalog)? Since this is a custom mount, I need to know the distance between the tank's rear mount bolt holes so I can re-weld the tabs in the right place. I think the tank came off a early 80's FL (based on the dash).
Here are the pics of by busted rear tank mount. Note the gap between the left frame tab (the one nearer to the top of the picture) and the tank...there are many threads showing and it is impossible to tighten this bolt up against nothing.
Filthy, when you mount that tank are the tank holes right up against the mounting tabs in the picture? meaning...can you snug up the bolts with no gaps like mine? I think that it should be solid in there so I am planning on adding a spacer between the tank and the tab to fill in the gap.
the right tab is completely broken off, thus the tie-wraps holding down the rear of the right tank. Smooth huh.
Vetto, I use spacers on mine. On the shovels one side is spaced more than the other to clear the rocker box on the right side. Try to make sure that the tanks don't touch the motor anywhere. When I tighten up the front lower mount I put a piece of card stock on top of the rocker box to make sure it doesn't touch, then remove it after the tank is secured. Check the right side along the top of the rocker boxes by passing a piece of paper over the top of the rockers to make sure they don't contact the tank. If they touch they will vibrate a hole in short order.
