need to know what CARBURETOR this is..its on a 1979 shovelhead
its blowing gass out front and when i throttle the gas drowns it out and drips all over motor
Thats a stock kehien carb. Most likely the original equipment carb. It should have a part number on a decal such as 27467-78A which would be the number of a stock 79 carb. You should be able to adjust the accelerator pump to provide less gas. These are usually trouble free carbs. Is this a new problem?
yes ..stripped bike ...powder coated..motor sent to hd shop for new gaskets and seals
when i got all back together this is problem..worked fine before.
do you have a pic of where set screw is?
thanks
To quote the manual the amount of fuel injected by the accelerating pump is adjusted by means of the rocker arm adjusting screw(3). Factoryu adjustment is 6mm (1/4") between the end of the screw and stop. Back screw out for more fuel volume, in for less. The rocker arm spring (45) controls stroke duration and is adjustable by means of three locating notches in the accelerator pump rocker arm (44) Center notch is standard adjustment. I'll attach a picture of the exploded diagram. I would also check to see if you have a manifold leak.
I looked in a different manual. Your carb is from a 1981 model. On that carb the (3) screw is the fast idle adjustment. I don't have one to look at closely so you will have to check to see if your accelerator pump is adjustable. Check to see if the rubber plug(24) is still in position over the low speed jet. Check your float level. Check diaphragm (28). The brass fitting in front mouth of the carb is connected to the accelerator pump and is designed to shoot gas to the rear of the carb. Did you disassemble the carb when you cleaned it? Did you get everything back lined up correctly?
I think Filthylucre may have it right. Many years ago, I rebuilt my carb on my 82" and it was getting ready to install the air cleaner. I looked into the throat of the carb and pulled back on the throttle at the same time. Gas squrited out of the carb and directly into my right eyeball. I had installed that little brass tube backwards even though I knew better.
Whenever you pull back on the throttle (move the accelerator pump) that brass jet is supposed to squirt gas toward the back of the carb, not into the air cleaner.
....I looked into the throat of the carb and pulled back on the throttle at the same time. Gas squrited out of the carb and directly into my right eyeball....
DOH! we've all had those moments. I don't know about you, but mine are typicly followed by a lot of cussing and then talking out loud about "damint I knew better" then followed by embarassment. Thanks for reminding us though that we're not the only ones who do something boneheaded. Usually in the end though it makes for a good chuckle.
