Default Clutch noise

I'm sure this has been asked and answered but numerous searches have not turned up the answer. Without sounding stupid i have a 79 Fat Bob 1200 the clutch when pulled does not disengage the transmission and it howls. I am well versed in wrenching just not so much on bikes. I'm just wondering where to start looking, is there a throwout bearing, etc? Also i have been told it has a wet clutch is this correct i have not had this apart yet but would like to try and order some parts ahead of time if possible, winter is coming, and would like to get it back on the road this year.

First thing to do is order the service manual and parts manual. The 79 had a wafer type throw out bearing on the right side of the transmission. You have to remove the cover to get to it. It is a three part bearing with a snap ring to hold it to the pushrod. This later style bearing is prone to failure compared to the old style automotive type it had prior to 75. If yours doesn't have the kick starter this would be a good time to install one since you are removing the cover anyway. Again you need the service manual and parts manual. The stock clutch is a dry clutch. You may have lost the snap ring off the push rod which is why the clutch does not disengage. Look for it at the bottom of the cover side. When you replace it get a regular snap ring rather than the C type that comes with the bearing kit.

E-bay is a good place to look here is a 78 1/2 to 84 Service Manual, item number 280381708166. The problem with the haynes and clymer books is that they are too inclusive and will confuse you with the many years included in one manual.
