FL, what i'm thinking he's describing isn't that he can walk up to it with the ign. switch off and push the button and it will crank over, but that the solenoid contacts are welding together and he can't get it to stop turning over, even by turning off the ign. switch. Waiting to hear if putting a different battery to it helps any

Yeah I re-read the post I believe you're right. That is usually caused by a weak battery. The solenoid may have to be disassembled and cleaned up if the pitting is too bad from the sticking.

Last night i didnt get a chance to try a battery. If the contacts are welded or sticking what causes them to free up once it fires? when it spins over it will quit once it fires. Hope to try the battery tonight once i get home.

Thanks guys

Inside the solenoid is a post with a metal disc on it. As current is applied to the small terminal it energizes a coil that pulls the disc toward the contacts on the two large terminals. One is battery the other is the startermotor. If the battery is weak the bendix gets stuck in the ring gear and the contact plate arcs to the terminals causing it to pit and burn. Here is what one looks like that stuck. This one is really not bad, and I cleaned it up a little.

They can be used again by taking off the snap ring and reversing it on the post.

Last night i put a tester on the battery and it showed 12.9 volts sitting and 11.4 while the lights were on and hitting the starter. So it seems the battery is good. So i believe from what you guys have told me the solenoid would be the next place to go?
