I have recently purchased a 76 flh. First question---- it has a edelbrock carb what is the red dial on the very top of the carb. next how do i keep gas from coming out of the carb while riding--- i have a spot on my pant leg after a ride. Thanks
Next question, Something must be goofy with the wiring. Where the kill switch is in OFF position it should not turn over right? Mine does. When i hit the start button the starter will spin until it fires..... When it does spin and i turn key to off it still goes its not right i know but what to check is the question????
Just a question for you, when it turns over with the switch off, do you mean that you try to start it with the switch on and after it doesn't start you turn off the switch and the starter keeps running on? If so, this is most often caused by low battery voltage. Make sure the battery is fully charged and have it load tested. Also take apart the starter solenoid and make sure the contacts aren't too badly burned and clean things up. You can flip over the washer in there if the other side isn't all burned up also.
Another question about your first question. Are you riding around without an air filter on the carb? if so, the carb will mist fuel out just a little bit, and it can get on you. Make sure that you have an air filter on when you are riding.
Yes when i yurn key on and hit the start button it starts spining the starter and if i hit kill switch or turn key to off position the starter still spins until engine fires. Battery is good i checked it after your post. So the solenoid is the place to check? And no i am not running without an air filter it has a hypercharger on it with a brand new K&N filter in it. So like was said in a previous post it must be in need of a good carb cleaning? It has dual plug heads but i have not yet pulled the new plugs to see what color they are........
I think the bat is weak The kill switch will not stop the starter once it engauges A weak bat will act like this Take a good bat say from your car and with good jumper cables and good connections jump across your bike bat
If the battery load tests good, I would first loosen all of the bolts for the primary chaincase and lift up on it and pull it to the back of the machine while tightening down to give the starter gear and the ring gear on the clutch as much clearance as possible, not that they are binding together and holding the solenoid closed when you let off of the key. Also, if you (or someone else) replaced the starter bendix gear and lubed the shaft where the gear sits with grease, that can cause them to stick also. Otherwise, in the solenoid is where i'd look.
Like sqdealgeorge said though, sounds an awful lot like a weak battery.
As far as the starter working with the kill switch or ignition in off position, thats indicates someone screwed with the wiring. The kill switch should cut power to the coil and starter button. I would correct that as soon as you can before someone drives away with it. The wiring diagram is in the service manual which you should have if you plan to do your own work on the bike. Get the parts manual also, its great for exploded drawings, part numbers and year interchangeablility for parts.
