Default engine dress-up?

i was thinking of getting a brass engine dress up kit for my shovel, but the ones im finding are going for around $100. im pretty sure i can get all the same brass acorn nuts at a hardware store for under $30. has anyone else done this. am i missing the reason its so expensive.

Brass is a softer metal so the hardware bolts will not handle a high torque, then kits I have seen are plated steel so you can hold a tightness.

A "Plug-n-plate" kit may let you brass plate your existing hardware.

Default Brass Plating

Three things to remember if you are going to brass-plate your hardware...

1. Buy new hardware. Any little flaw (wrench marks, nicked boltheads, etc.) will show up like a sore thumb. Costs a little more, but it's worth it.
2. Buy quality stainless. After a while, brass and copper will start to wear on the edges of nuts, bolts, and washers. It's even worse inside of Allenhead
bolts. As soon as that base metal hits the elements it will start to corrode and your nice brass plating will start to sheet off like bad chrome. Stainless won't do this if it's a good grade.
3. Run a tap or die over all the threads before using anything on the bike.

Do it right...don't do it twice.

Yea Brass tarnishes real fast and most of them aren't easy to reach to re-polish, I'd pass and go chrome or for stock look use stainless like psyco says. You see some on show bikes that never go outside, other thing they use on show bikes is gold plating won't tarnish but costs muchos
