Default Stator Issues

I have a problem with the stator in my 1977 shovelhead I have replaced it twice now but not have had any luck the bolts keep backing out not the holes are elongated. I plan to do a rebuild shortly any advice on how to repair the holes and how to secure the bolts the next time around. I am hoping not to have to buy a new case if I can get away with it.

If the helicoils don't do it, you can always move the stator a little bit and drill and tap new holes. Do not drill to deep or you will go through the case. The early alternators used a slotted screw and had a metal lock tab that you crimped into the slot to keep it from backing out. part number 29988-73.

I would try helicoils, now you can go to a auto parts house and just buy one size instead of the whole kit.The one size package is only around $28.00 and they work !

helicoils probably will not work if the holes are clearly elongated(as you have said that they are)
this is a common problem
rotate and redrill, as suggested, is the common fix
get a transfer punch, it will be worth it
the watch the depth warning was well given
I love those slot head screws and the big bucket lock mech..... they work well

Edward, I have bad news
The issue is not the stator mount
It is the cast in insert that holds the left hand main bearings (the timkens)
You have had a major failure
It must be knocking itself silly, surely
You need major repair, and quite possibly new cases

Looks bad, It appears the cast in bearing support has broken free. No easy fix for that. Start looking for new cases.

In some cases, it can be repaired
You can use a screw technique from the inside
But you need someone who knows how(like me, and I am nowhere near you)
And depending, it may not be possible anyway(yours looks most likely not)
and even if it is, it may be uneconomical
