Default shovelhead value

Hello everyone,
I just joined and have a question, About 9 years ago I bought an old P.O.S. suzuki I have ridden it less than 100 miles in 9 years due to it always being broken down. My father in law has a 1974 flh he wants to sell and it is really calling my name. So I am wondering what a fair price is? I dont know anything about harleys and am basically new to riding. So heres what I know about the bike.

It is titled as a special construction although it has the stock 74 flh frame. Stock 4sp tranny, 93 inch motor, the rake has been extended a bit, it has an fx rear fender. The bike has been completely gone through and is really nice. It has new custom paint. Pretty much everything has been addressed.

Most of my riding will be close to home but I would like to make 1 or 2 longer trips a year. I can see this being a bike that I keep and upgrade over the years, mabey someday adding a new harley for long trips. He had it listed locally for 8k says it will be less for me, but hasnt told me a number yet. With that title is a real harley? Man, this thing is calling I just dont want to pay alot more than its worth.

Thanks for any thoughts you guys have.

Does it hurt the value, only the purchaser and your insurance company can tell you.
As far as the tittle goes here in Wisconsin the ones I have built say H-D Replica on the title and I have never had a problem with the value. But the key is they do say H-D on them !

The value of a Shovelhead is mostly in your heart. It'll never par up in money value to anything made in the last ten years or so.
So I ask you...are you buying this thing to ride or are you buying it based on resale value? One makes it priceless and the other makes it about $6,000.

Well, since you asked, if you didn't like fixing the JPOS, a shovel is not really a hop on and go kind of machine, they require a fair amount of tinkering, cussing, tweaking, fixing, repairing, etc. That said, if they are taken care of they are an awesome ride that will serve you well for a long time. Personally, I think if you "ride the dog snot out of it" it won't last long. Better go buy a twinkie.

As far as the title goes, I don't think that has a lot of effect on the value of the bike. It may to some people, but it is only a piece of paper. What really matters is whats between your legs.

Its worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it, lots of shovels (and every other kind of Harley) going unsold out there right now, I've seen some really nice ones that wouldn't bring 6K. So I would guess fair market value in the 5-6K range. You didn't say where you are located, that may have some effect on it. I am sure your FIL (or somebody) has sunk a shitload of money into it, but it is unrealistic to think you can get it back out these days.

Let us know what you do, we're always glad to help out. Pictures would help. Don't think with the wrong head.

Hope this helps. As always, JMHO, YMMV, etc.

Bob

Thanks Bob. I'm just over the mountain from you in North Central Idaho. I am a little worried about reliability, but its in good shape and I wont get more than 3-5,000 miles a year. Thanks for everyones input.

I too would be concerned about the reliabilty of a 93in. Shovel that was having the D.S. ridden out of it. The longer the stroke the faster the piston speed. Use the torque not rpm. $6000.
