My 82 FXE has started backfiring an missing sporadically, I suspect the gel battery is giving up after 2 yrs of use. While trouble shooting I checked the ohms of my coil, oem # 31609-80, according to the shop manual primary should be 3.3 to 3.7 ohms and secondary should be 16,500 to 19,500 ohms. I am getting 4.5 primary and 23,900 secondary, do these high readings show coil as being bad? I have allways found readings to be low or no readings at all on other bad units, I am ordering a new coil but wondering if readings show bad?
Unless your batt is dead shorted, it doesn't take much juice to run the motor. I'd try the coil or Ign. Two years ago I ran 150 mi with a near dead batt, wasn't charging, barely could see the headlight was on.
Thanks for the reply's I have a new battery, I'll try installing her an checking for a good healthy spark. I figured to get good coil inorder to check ignition next. I was told by a friend that any difference in ohms readings, up or down would make the coil bad, so with out confirmation I guess I'll have to wait on new coil to finish checking.
