Default Carb question...

I finally got my bike on the road today...it ran great under normal riding, but it died on me 3 times when coming to a stop. It eventually did start back up but it took a minute. It's like it's running outta fuel or something. It's an S&S Super B carb. Like I said, it ran great....just starved itself when stopping. I don't think it's idleing to low...it had plenty of gas...and yes the petcock was on. What do you think it could be?? Maybe the float??? Help me out guys.....I'm ready to ride this thing. Thanks!

I doubt it's the float, if it flows enough to ride it should surely flow enough to idle. You said you don't think it is idling too low, but what do you consider too low? They sound REAL good around 700-800 RPM but that's doing the oil system no justice. What if you increase the idle some, then do the same test coming to a stop. Does it still stall?

Did you rewire this bike too by any chance? Not trying to be a smart azz or anything, but I knew...... a guy who once wired his brake light switch power from his coil. Everytime the brake was applied it was a kill switch an I know I I mean he's never done that again

LOL... That's awesome. Yes, I did rewire the bike, but everything is in good working order. I don't think it's the float either. I just pulled the aircleaner and it looks like there is too much fuel at the butterfly when the engine is off. I'm going to dig into the S&S manual, but there is no intake leaks and the timing is correct. I'm thinking idle mixture maybe to lean to keep it idleing???

I don't have a tach....and it is does seem a touch low. If it was shutting off because of low idle would it fire right back up when warm?? It seems like it takes 15-20 seconds and a crank or two to get it to fire.

Shovels are fun but you need to get very analytical sometimes and eliminate items one at a time. Ok, don't need a tach, simple test is to idle it up a bit, then just ride it. If it no longer stalls at idle, hmmmm, maybe idle too low? If it keeps stalling, and it might based on your statement that it looks like too much fuel at the butterfly when off, it could maybe be a couple things.

Did it run ok before with same carb setup or is this something new? Could be your idle jet is too big flooding it out with too much fuel. This would result in having to crank a bit before starting to clear the fuel. Also, if your float adjustment is off a bit, the shutoff may not be working or there may be a piece of dirt under the float stop. Once you slow down and the bowl fills, the fuel has to go somewhere, into your engine and floods it out. You can test this out by watching the inside of the carb with the bike off and the petcock on. If the float is malfunctioning you should see the carb fill up with fuel. It may take a little time if it is a slow leak, but be sure not to leave the petcock on too long because if this is the case, again the fuel has to go somewhere, and that somewhere will be down inside your cylinders. Let us know after you check those things and we'll see what else we may need to check.
