Default another batterie

Well I’ve had bad issues with batteries and had a thread up that was complicated but no real response. But any way I have a 80 fxs. I put points on it and all electric is off. Kick only and lights. I rewired it again, toggle switch for coil and lights pretty simple. I have regulator to the battery and hot going to 15 amp breaker and from breaker to light switch and coil switch that’s it. Riding down the road and bam no power battery is shot brand new battery. Been thru 7 batteries 6 before the point’s conversion and kick only conversion and now one more. Can the regulator have something intermittent? New stator and regulator is not even a year old. Compu fire say they drought its the regulator cause it is charging fine when i check it. but there is nothing else. Compu fire also said connect the regulator the leaving side of the battery but the book and everyone else says connect the regulator to the battery so that’s what I did. Can someone please help.

I would concentrate on the basics and start with the stator/rotor.Have you removed the primary and done a visual? When I do chopper wiring the primary system I use is simple. The plug goes into the stator and the other wire goes to the hot side of the battery. For all the other items I run a hot lead from the battery to a buss bar and pull what ever I need from that such as lights, ignition etc. After all the problems you have had I doubt if it is the regulator as I have had good one and bad ones but no intermitant ones and it seems the batteries are the result and not the cause so go and pull the primary and inspect the stator. Good Luck !

I attach my regulator to a 30 amp circuit breaker attached to the positive post. HD did it both ways, direct or to a breaker. I like to use the breaker. I also run the hot leads to the ignition from the breaker. You said you would be riding down the road and bam the battery is shot? I would look for a dead short somewhere that is killing your battery.

I have checked the stator visualy and to ground its fine and chargeing. I just rewired the bike a weeek ago for the 7th time. I have pulled all the wire and rewired with new. If it is a short wouldnt it happen all the time. Cant see it being the battery cause it is the 7th one with 3 differant brands. Any more suggestion

It could be an intermitent short caused by a loose/broken wire or ground, bad switch. Make sure the regulator has a good ground to the bracket and the frame. Sometimes a thick coat of paint prevents the bracket from grounding. Post a copy of your wireing diagram maybe one of us can see something you overlooked.

Sometimes when a frame gets painted or powder coated the areas for mounting items that require a good ground are not masked off and the whole bike has crazy electrical problems. As far a short happening if that was the case I would think that you would have seen some sign of it such as melted insulation or heavy arc marks for it to kill a battery. It would be like arc welding for a battery to get shorted.

Well here’s the deal I don’t no how to post pict. so here goes. Wire from batt. to circuit breaker from the cb to ign toggle from toggle to coil and break light. From cb to light toggle from toggle to head light and tail light. Light is just on no high or low beam. Also I rewired the bike last week and soldered the wire and if it was a short or bad ground how come it only happens about every 2 weeks or so and everything is fine then bam no power. And if it was a short why wouldn’t it trip my 15 amp cb. the only thing straight to the batt. is the regulator and it is the only thing I haven’t change since all these problems. Think I should try a new reg. Any other suggestion is greatly appreciated.

The way You wired the bike will work, although I think the 15 amp breaker is light.I usually use a 25 amp and then put a fuseable link in line for all the acc too,but that is not the cause of the problem. The only thing that can overcharge the battery is the Regulator. The rotor and stator can't as that is why we have the regulator,so It sounds to me as the regulator is not doing its job. Good Luck!
