Default moded. swing arm.

my 83 fxdg has a moded. swing arm. the shock bolts through the middle of the swing arm frame rather than through a block welded to the top of the swing arm. this gives the bike a grate lowered look but the belt can rub the inner primary as it gos to the drive sprocket. i have removed some metal in that ariea but dont dare to remove any more for fear the starter mounting bolt could rip out. the belt is on tight side of acceptable. i rub the top of belt with a bar of soap before a ride to keep the friction down. so iam looking at options that would give more clearance. i know rising the *** end back to original height is the best but i would rather keep soap-en and change the belt every 15,000 miles than rise the *** end.

this is the 2nd belt

thanks

You should worry more about that swingarm snapping in two, now that it's been weakened by putting a shock-size bolt hole in it. It may have been slugged with a solid bar inside it, but still....... one good pothole, and you will get very real skidmarks in your underwear (if you live).

Get a new swingarm. Use lowered shocks. Do it right.

Have you looked into an idler pulley to adjust the slack in the belt and hold it down away from the primary case?
I don't know if it is made in a kit but I imagine something could be fabbed up.
It would have to be mounted to the swingarm to move with it.
The other thing you could do it fab up a travel limiter for the swingarm but it would bottom out on it for sure.
Have you tried setting the shock springs to their highest setting? It would make for a harsher ride but that is probably better than the hard stop that a travel limiter would cause.
<edit> Oh, I just looked again, it appears you are already on the stiffest setting.

Have the same set-up on mine, been running it for 20 years in Maine (lots of potholes) and haven't seen even a crack yet. Bottoms out alot with a passenger on board. Running a chain, have allready replaced the inner primary once due to chain rub, an idler is the only way I can see to correct the rub. Haven't built one yet. I agree with the stance, tried a stock swing arm for a season and gotta say didn't like it. At all.
Am also running 12" shock's, she sits low.

if you want to keep the stance the idler pulley is the best option

i should have said after market swing arm rather than modified. still probley not as strong as stock.

will look into the pulley mod but a pulley on drive side of the belt will need to be designed to meet durability requirements. has anybody done this?

the smaller front drive pulley sounds good but i would have to get a smaller rear pulley also to keep mph and rpm close to what i have now and i suppose there may not be a belt that would fit.

thanks for the ideas

Nothing wrong with that modification. That is sound engineering and that section is actually stronger than the stock swing arm.
