I have cked for a leak by spraying carb cleaner around the intake ect, it only pops at around 2200 rpm so I would say a short would not only be at 1 rpm, both cyl were the same comp so wouldn't that rule out a broken valve spring ?
If you have a vibration short in your ignition wiring, it could run great everywhere but 2200. Just run a check on your wiring, to include your ignition switch, your kill switch at the handlebar if you have one, and the connections on your coil. DO NOT assume your ignition switch is OK. If you have the handlebar kill, while you have the switch housing off, wrap the handlebar with electrical tape. This will stop any potential future problems.
The problem you are describing is very frustrating to you, and we all have experienced it. It's a matter of elimination.
When I would get a popping it was usually due to a lean condition, what is the history
prior to this starting? Was the bike operated at a different altitude were the carb may have been jetted for it and how about the pipes?Do they have enough back presure?
There can be many factors for this problem and without all the recent history it could take time to figure it out.Good Luck!
